How to set a start and end date in Timepath

Adding both a start date and an end date to your event turns it from a single point in time into a defined period. This is especially useful for representing historical eras, project phases, or any situation that spans more than one day. By defining the exact duration, your timeline becomes more accurate, easier to read, and more informative for your audience.

Step 1 – Add a new event

Click Add event in the timeline editor to create a new event.

Step 2 – Open the event editor

Click the pencil icon to open the editing menu for your event.

Step 3 – Add a start date

In the date field, enter the start date of your event. This determines where the event begins on your timeline.

Step 4 – Open advanced date options

Scroll down or expand the Advanced date options section to reveal additional settings.

Step 5 – Enable the end date

Switch on the Add end date option. This allows you to set a specific end point for the event.

Step 6 – Enter the end date

Add the end date for your event. Your timeline will now display a bar that visually represents the full duration between the start and end date.

Why setting a start and end date matters

  • Improved accuracy – Ensures your timeline reflects the true duration of events.

  • Better readability – Duration bars help viewers instantly understand how long something lasted.

  • Improved storytelling – Useful for illustrating periods like wars, leadership terms, or multi-day events.

  • Contextual clarity – Makes it easier to compare overlapping events or understand historical sequences.
