The History of Policing

The Establishment of Police Forces

By: Morgan Staple

Sir Robert Peel

Sir Robert Peel was the man who helped develop the first modern police force.

  • He did this by pushing for the creation of the Metropolitan Force Act. (This act allowed Sir Robert Peel to handpick 1000 men to become part of the Metropolitan Police Force (a.k.a. The Met).)

  • - The 100 handpicked men were called "Bobbies."

  • - This group had two main beliefs:

  • - 1. It is possible to discourage crime

  • - 2. Practice preventative control

NYPD

The NYPD is the largest/ primary law enforement agency within New York City.

  • The NYPD actually formed when New York decided to combine the nightwatch and day ward programs together.

Bow Street Runners

Bow Street Runners was the first localized police force that were made of gangsters and criminals that came together as a group and formed the idea to keep their neighborhoods and communities safe.

  • Located in Westminister, London, Henry Fielding created this group.

  • - The group was created into a large influx of crime to protect the people.

Fraternal Order of Police

The Fraternal Order of Police was established; it is the world's largest orginazations of sworn law enforcement officers.

  • The purpose of FOP is to protect and serve communities, including the men and women who try to protect society. (They work to improve working conditions and safety for officers.)

Law Enforcement Assistance Administration

This was when the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration was established.

  • The LEAA is a law enforcement agenciy designed to reduce crime.

  • - However, the LEAA was abolished in 1982 because the program lac ked proof of signicicant impact on crime problems.
